Nels Backlund, DVM

Dr. Backlund is a life-long resident of Omaha. He graduated from Iowa State Veterinary School in 1975, and opened the Backlund Animal Clinic at its present location in 1977. He is a past president of the local Veterinary Organization, the Nebraska Academy of Veterinary Medicine. He was instrumental in starting up the Animal Emergency Clinic in Omaha and currently now serves as its Hospital Administrator. His wife, Jeanne, has retired from her position as Home Arts instructor at Millard Central Middle School. They have 3 children, Travis, Kyle and Michelle, a daughter-in-law, Kellie, a granddaughter, Karsen and a grandson, Jase. He has a Golden Retriever, Kaylee.

 

Priscilla, Retired Clinic Kitty Emeritus

Priscilla served well as our clinic kitty. She taught Gus Gus all he knows. She now spends most of her time on the beach or lounging with Dr. Backlund's mother.

Gus is our current clinic kitty. He has taken over Prissy's duties and still manages to have fun running around the clinic. He enjoys alternating weekends with the Warnekes and the Backlunds.

 

Janet Warneke, Veterinary Technician

Janet is an Omaha native and attended South High. She is a graduate Medical Technologist. She graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1984, and has worked in animal health since 1981. She has extensive knowledge of lab techniques and microscopy in addition to being a superb animal nurse. Janet's interests outside the clinic are crafts and gardening. She and her husband Mark are also wine aficionados. They have 3 cats, Ike, George and Smudge.

 

Stacey Boehm, Veterinary Assistant

Stacey is originally from Littleton, Colorado. She attended Littleton High School and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley with a degree in Biology. As the daughter of a veterinarian, her love and respect for animals has been life long. She takes great pride in caring for pets. When she is not at the clinic Stacey enjoys cuddling up with a good book or knitting. She has a 5 year old cat, Willie who likes to play "fetch". Stacey is taking classes in sign language and hopes to help as an interpreter at some time. Stacey has two nieces and two nephews that she adores and tries to see as often as possible.

 

Anne Kurgan, Receptionist

Anne is from Blair, NE and graduated from Blair High School. Her interests are showing Quarter Horses. She has three Quarter Horses Alex, Archie and Bella. She also is interested in Agility Training with her Minature Pinscher, Zeus. Anne has 2 Corgies, Gizmo and Petey and a Persian cat, Priscilla. In addition to her animal training interest she occupies her free time boating on the Missouri. She has been married to her husband, Mike, for 2 years.

 

Sarah Westrom, Veterinary Technician

Sarah is from New England. She graduated in fine arts from Alfred University in New York State and later she graduated from Bel Rea Institute in Colorado in Veterinary Technology and worked for 5 years in Denver before joining us in February of 2007. She has 2 dogs, Bugsy and Cassie, and 3 cats, Lucky, Ozzy, and Angele. She hopes to back into photograpy in her spare time and do some pet photography.

I adopted the Backlunds in 2001. My sister adopted a family right across the street so we often play together. We also like to dress up for special days. This is my sister, Sadie, and me (I'm on the left) getting ready to go to a Christmas party.
